Five Fun Historical Facts About Newburgh
1. Newburgh was home to George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Due to it’s location on the Hudson River, this beautiful setting provided him the perfect vantage point to ensure the British weren’t sneaking up the Hudson to attack West Point. Proximity to New York City also allowed Washington to be close to the hub of his network of spies that helped win the Revolution!

2. Newburgh has long been a manufacturing hub. The picturesque Algonquin Park was formerly gunpowder factory that supplied the Union during the Civil War. Similarly, the wet banks of the Hudson RIver provided an ideal opportunity by way of plentiful clay deposits. In its time, Newburgh produced Roseton bricks which were shipped down to New York City during the early 1900s. RCA and Pepsi would later manufacture their wares in Newburgh. Regal Bags a long-time Newburghian owned small-business made its way into the Guinness Book of World Records, as it is the only building in North America where you enter from the top floor. What a commute!

3. Thomas Edison made Newburgh the first city to have light. Starting with a small strip of electrically lit businesses in NYC, Edison moved up north and set up shop in Newburgh. With a bustling industry, Newburgh soon became the first city to provide commercial electrical services for everyday citizens to utilize as a utility.

4. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt spent much of his childhood in the Hudson Valley as his mother Sara Delano Roosevelt grew up in Newburgh. The Delanos were long-time benefactors of Newburgh, purchasing the land for the Algonquin Park as well as the Delano-Hitch Stadium and Recreation Center where our minor league team the Newburgh Diamonds currently play. The Delano Roosevelt Estate is now home to one of Mount Saint Mary’s campuses.

5. The Ritz Theater in the City of Newburgh was often a launching pad for Broadway due to its proximity to NYC, and shows would be tested before making it to the great white way. American icon Lucille Ball made her stage debut in 1941 at the Ritz Theatre. Her first time onstage, she was joined by her then newly married husband Desi Arnez and started the act that would someday become “I Love Lucy”.
